What is Human Design authority?
and how you are built to decide
Your authority is the part of you that makes correct decisions, and it is not your mind. Which one you have depends on which centers are defined in your chart. There are seven, and knowing yours changes how you decide rather than what you decide. If decisions are what brought you here, you are in the majority: across thousands of questions people ask inside their readings, how to decide is the one that comes up most.
The short answer
Authority in Human Design is your body's decision-making mechanism. It is determined by which energy centers are defined in your chart, and it describes HOW you are built to reach a correct decision: in the moment, over a few days, by talking it out, or across a full lunar cycle. It says nothing about what you should choose.
Every type has an authority, and it is the more practical half of the pair. Your strategy tells you how life comes to you. Your authority tells you what to do when it arrives. Most people were taught to decide with the mind, which is the one part of the chart that is never the authority for anyone.

Emotional authority is by far the most common, at nearly half of all charts we calculate. If you have spent your life being pushed for an answer on the spot, that pressure was designed for someone else's chart.
Emotional Authority
Your Solar Plexus is defined, so you move through an emotional wave and there is no truth for you in the moment of the ask. Clarity arrives over time, as the wave rises and settles.
The rule that changes lives here is simple and hard: never decide on the spot. What feels certain tonight looks different tomorrow, and the version that survives a night is the real one. Nearly half of all charts run this way, so if you have felt pressured to answer immediately your whole life, that pressure was built for other people's designs.
Sacral Authority
Your Sacral is defined and your Solar Plexus is not, so your body answers before your mind does, often as a sound rather than a sentence.
The uh-huh and the uh-uh are the decision. The work is noticing the response in the half second before you start justifying it. Ask someone to put decisions to you as yes-or-no questions and listen for what your body does first.
Splenic Authority
Your Spleen is defined while your Sacral and Solar Plexus are not, so your survival intelligence leads. It works in the present tense only.
Splenic knowing is fast, quiet, and gone. Most people with this authority learned to talk themselves out of it and later found out it had been right. Trusting it feels reckless until you notice the pattern in your own history.
Ego Authority
Your Heart center leads, whether projected or manifested, which makes willpower and desire the deciding factor.
The honest question is whether you truly want this, not whether it is the right thing to do, and your answer holds only if you can back it with real energy. Promises made against your own will are the ones that break. This is the rarest authority in the charts we calculate.
Self Projected Authority
Your G center connects to your Throat, so your truth comes out of your own mouth before you know it consciously.
You are not asking for advice, you are using another person as a sounding board so you can hear yourself. That makes who you think out loud with part of your decision-making process, so choose them carefully.
Mental Authority
Also called environmental or sounding-board authority, this belongs to Projectors with no defined Sacral, Spleen, Solar Plexus, or Heart-to-Throat connection.
Your clarity comes from where you are and who is around you rather than from something inside. Discuss the decision with several people you trust, in a place that feels right, and listen for what you notice rather than what you conclude.
Lunar Authority
This is the Reflector authority. With every center open there is nothing fixed inside to decide from, so time and environment do the work.
You are designed to move with the moon, about twenty-eight days, for anything that matters, talking it through with people you trust as the cycle turns. Nearly everyone will tell you to hurry. Waiting is not indecision, it is the mechanism, and it keeps you out of choices that were never yours.

Strategy comes from your type and describes how life reaches you: responding, informing, waiting for an invitation. Authority comes from your defined centers and describes how you decide once something is in front of you. You need both, and authority is the one people feel first.
Which authority is most common?
Emotional, at about 47 percent of the charts we calculate, then Sacral at about 27 percent and Splenic at about 15 percent. Ego authority is the rarest at around one percent.
Can my authority change?
No. It comes from your birth chart and stays the same for life. What changes is how much you actually follow it. Another person can temporarily define a center in you, which is part of why decisions feel different around certain people.
Why is the mind never the authority?
The mind is designed to take in and share information, not to decide for you. It is also the part most shaped by other people's opinions. In Human Design the mind is an excellent advisor and a poor decision maker, which is why the body leads.
What if I ignore my authority?
Decisions still get made, they just tend to cost more. Each type has a signal for that: frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment. Those feelings are information rather than a verdict on you.
How do I find my authority?
Enter your birth date, time, and city in the free calculator. Your authority appears with your type, strategy, profile, and centers, and the short reading explains what yours means.
Can you have more than one authority?
No. There is a fixed hierarchy, so only one center decides. If your Solar Plexus is defined it always leads, no matter what else is defined in your chart.
Which authorities are the most common?
Emotional, Sacral, and Splenic together account for roughly nine in ten charts. Across the charts we calculate that is about 47, 27, and 15 percent.
