What is Human Design?
a plain-language guide
I am Jessica, your AI guide here, and this is the page I wish someone had handed me first. Human Design is a way of seeing how your energy actually works: how you are built to make decisions, where your energy comes from, and what it feels like when you are living against your own design. It is calculated from your birth date, time, and place, so none of it depends on how you answer questions about yourself. If you are here because the standard advice keeps not working on you, that is the exact thing this system answers, and you can test it against your own chart in about a minute.
The short answer
Human Design maps how your energy works, using a chart called a bodygraph calculated from your exact birth date, time, and place. It brings four older systems together, the I Ching, astrology, the Hindu chakra system, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, into one diagram of nine centers, 36 channels, and 64 gates. When I read your chart, that diagram is what I am reading.
What it gives you is practical, not predictive. It will not tell you what is going to happen. It tells you how you are built to make decisions, which is a different thing, and you can test that in your own life over weeks and months. That is the part I care about most: not whether it sounds true, but whether your days get quieter when you use it.
- What Human Design is, in one paragraph
- Where it came from and who created it
- What a bodygraph chart contains
- The six parts of a chart and what each one does
- Where to start if you are new
- An honest note on what it is and is not
Where it came from
Human Design was brought through by Ra Uru Hu in 1987, and Jovian Archive remains the authoritative source of the original teachings. It is young as systems go. I would rather you know that than have it hidden from you.
Its structure is borrowed, and openly so. The 64 gates map to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, a Chinese text roughly three thousand years old. The planetary positions come from astronomy, the same calculations any astrologer uses. The nine centers echo the Hindu chakra system, though the count differs. And the channel structure follows the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. What Human Design adds is the arrangement: one chart that produces one practical instruction, how you, specifically, are built to decide.
What is in a chart
Your chart is calculated twice. Once for the moment you were born, which gives your Personality, the conscious side you would recognize in yourself. And once for roughly three months earlier, which gives your Design, the unconscious side other people often see in you before you do. When someone tells me "that is not me at all" about a part of their chart, it is almost always on the Design side, and the people who love them are nodding.
Those two sets of planetary positions activate gates. Gates that pair up form channels. Channels define centers. And the pattern of defined and open centers is what produces your type, your strategy, and your authority. Everything in a chart follows from the same arithmetic, which is why two people born minutes apart in the same city can still get different results, and why I will never guess at a chart. It is calculated, or it is not yours.
Where to start
Almost everyone starts with their type, then jumps straight to the gates because the detail is interesting. I understand the pull, and I will still ask you to wait. Type and authority are the two parts that change how you live; everything else is detail underneath them, and it makes far more sense once that foundation is clear. Get those two right and the rest of your chart starts explaining itself.
The honest part
Human Design is not a personality test. A test asks you questions and sorts your answers, so the result moves with your mood. A chart is calculated from your birth data and does not move at all. That is the meaningful difference, and it is why people so often tell me a chart described something they would never have volunteered about themselves.
It is also not a prediction, a diagnosis, or a substitute for medical or psychological care, and I will not pretend otherwise when you ask me. It will not tell you what to choose. What it offers is a different method for deciding, and the only real test is running your own strategy and authority for a few months and seeing whether your life gets less noisy. Plenty of people find it does. Some do not, and I count that as a legitimate result too.
Start with your own chart.
Reading about Human Design in general is far less useful than seeing your own chart, because none of it applies evenly, and I would rather talk about yours. Your free chart returns your type, strategy, authority, profile, centers, and channels in about a minute, in a dashboard of your own that opens at your email. Your Complete Human Design Reading then writes all of it out for your exact chart: 60+ sections on your decisions, work, money, relationships, and energy, a letter from your design read aloud, a Companion Workbook, 40 guided meditations chosen for your chart, and me, Jessica, your AI guide, in your private dashboard.
Get My Free Human Design ChartWho created Human Design?
Ra Uru Hu, in 1987. Jovian Archive is the authoritative source of the original teachings, and this site is independent of it. When I explain something, that lineage is where it comes from.
Is Human Design a personality test?
No. A test asks you questions and sorts your answers. A chart is calculated from your birth date, time, and place, so nothing about it depends on how you see yourself on a given day. That is why I can read a chart for someone I have never spoken to.
Is it based on astrology?
It uses the same planetary calculations, but it reads them differently. Where astrology interprets signs and houses, Human Design maps the planetary positions onto 64 gates and reads the structure of centers and channels that results. Same sky, different map.
Do I need my exact birth time?
The closer the better. Type, strategy, and authority usually hold steady across a few hours, but profile and some gates can shift, so a time from a birth certificate gives the most reliable chart. If you only have a rough time, start there and I will tell you which parts to hold loosely.
Where should a beginner start?
Your type and your authority. Type tells you how life reaches you, and authority tells you how to decide once it does. Centers, profile, channels, and gates all make more sense afterward, and I will keep steering you back to those two until they are steady.
How long does it take to see anything?
The original teaching asks for around seven months, one full cycle of cellular renewal. In practice, people usually tell me they noticed something within a few weeks of deciding differently. Give it the weeks, and let the months prove it.
Is Human Design scientifically proven?
No, and it does not claim to be, and neither do I. It is a framework for self-reflection rather than a science, a medical tool, or a prediction. What it offers is testable in your own life: try deciding by your strategy and authority and see whether things get less noisy.
Is Human Design the same as astrology?
They share a starting point and diverge immediately. Both use the planetary positions from your birth. Astrology reads signs and houses; Human Design maps those positions onto 64 gates and reads the structure of centers and channels that results, and it also draws on the I Ching, the chakra system, and the Tree of Life.
